Oklahoma learner’s permit requirements and application steps

Individuals, who are between 15½ and 18 years of age, can apply for a learner’s permit in order to gain the right to practice supervised driving legally. In addition to this, a learner’s permit requires always being accompanied by a licensed driver, who is older than 21.

Requirements for a permit

  • Before you start, you must be at least 15½ years old
  • You must receive proper driver education and learn how to drive
  • Then you must apply and bring required documentation
  • You must pass the vision acuity test and have 20/60 vision with or without corrective lenses (or 20/50 in one eye)
  • Then, you must take the written knowledge test and answer questions on Oklahoma traffic rules and regulations
  • Finally, you must visit a Tag Agency and then pay the permit fee of $38.5

Requirements for a license

  • To begin with, you must hold your learner’s permit (for at least six months)
  • Complete driver education
  • Practice supervised driving for at least 50 hours, including 10 hours of nighttime driving. Note that your parents or legal guardian are going to confirm it, signing the Affidavit of Driver Training
  • Schedule a drive test and come with your parents/legal guardian
  • Pass the drive test and visit a Tag Agency
  • The last step is to pay the required license fee and receive it

  • Certificate of completed driver educations
  • Insurance verification form

Driving restrictions

  • Carrying only one unrelated passenger when you are driving alone
  • Once you turn 18 or hold your intermediate license for at least six months, you will be able to get a full, unrestricted driver’s license.

How to obtain a full, unrestricted driver’s license in Oklahoma

Requirements for a license

  • To start with, you must have your learner’s permit
  • Secondly, you must schedule a road test, arrive in your own vehicle and pass the test
  • Thirdly, you must visit a Tag Agency and pay the license fee of $38.50

Required documents

  • Primary ID (certified birth certificate, valid, unexpired US passport, identification card issued by Department of Public Safety, citizenship naturalization documents, alien registration card, Citizen Born Abroad)
  • Secondary ID (for example, out of state driver’s license, military identification card, gun permit, pilot license, Social Security Card, hunting or fishing license and so on)
  • Insurance security verification form

What you should know about the road test

For the road test, you must bring your own vehicle, which is in good mechanical condition and has proper registration. The examiner will conduct the test and check whether you can control the car (or motorcycle) and perform basic maneuvers such as turning right and left, backing, parking on a hill.

Moreover, he will also ask you to use signals and drive in the proper lane and assess your knowledge of traffic rules, signs, signals and markings.

License replacement

If you lose your driver’s license or accidentally destroy it, you have the right to request a new license and replace the old one. To do so, you must contact the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety or visit a driver license office and request a new one.

Pay attention to the fact that you can replace only a valid license, and not an expired one.

Oklahoma driver’s license renewal

In the state of Oklahoma, the driver’s license is issued for four years from the month in which you paid the fee and it expires the last day of the month. You can renew the license about one year before the expiration date without losing any remaining time of the previous license.

To renew the license in person, you should make an appointment, visit a tag agency, present your Primary and Secondary IDs and complete renewal by paying the required fee. If you are a foreigner, you will also need to present immigration documents.

In case you let the license expire for more than three years, you will be required to retake the vision and written tests, as well as the road skills exam.

You may renew the license by mail if you are out of state. To renew by mail, you must provide your full legal name and date of birth, license number, residential address and copies of Primary and Secondary identification. You must also include the out of state address so that the Department can send the license to that location.

Once you complete the steps mentioned above, you must include the required license fee and send the application packet.
